Manager Reviews

Understand how the Manager Review step works how managers rate each talent's goals one by one, add justifications and comments, and submit completed evaluations during the cycle.

Written by Mohamed Shantory

Before You Begin

  • The Manager Review step is added to the workflow in Step 5: Work Flow. The admin places it after the performance sheet has been submitted (and approved, if applicable).

  • Managers review each talent on their team who is enrolled in the cycle. Each talent has their own review form.

  • The rating scale used during the review is configured in Step 4: Rating Settings. Managers assign ratings based on those scales.

  • If AI Review Assistance is enabled (Step 1: Cycle Details), managers will see an AI assist option inside the review form to help draft review text.

What the Manager Review Covers

During the Manager Review step, the manager works through each talent's goals one at a time. For each goal, the manager assigns a rating and leaves a comment. The review form has two panels:

Reviews (middle panel) — This is where the manager rates and comments on each goal. For each goal, the manager selects a rating from the configured scale (displayed as numbered buttons, for example 1 through 5), and a rating label and description appear automatically based on the selected number. The manager then writes a comment explaining their assessment of the talent's performance on that goal.

Performance Areas (right panel) — A reference panel showing the talent's full performance data: Goals (with status, KPI progress, target value, and deadline), Competencies, Appraisals, Trainings, and Potential — all collapsible. This panel gives the manager context while filling in the rating and comment. It does not require separate input.

The final review score is calculated automatically based on the ratings assigned and the score formula configured in Step 6.

How Managers Find Pending Reviews

When the Manager Review step opens, managers receive a notification. Pending reviews are accessible from two places:

Things To-Do (Home) — The home dashboard shows a pending task for the review step with the cycle name and deadline. The task also shows overall team completion progress.

My Team — Managers can navigate to My Team in the left navigation, select the cycle, and open the review from there.

Completing the Manager Review

Click the pending review task to open the review panel. The panel has three sections: a talent list on the left, the Reviews panel in the middle, and the Performance Areas panel on the right.

Selecting a Talent

The left column shows all team members enrolled in this cycle with a Review Progress indicator at the top showing overall completion (for example, 4/11 reviewed). Talents are grouped under All, Reviewed, and Pending tabs. Each talent's name appears with a completion count showing how many of their goals have been reviewed. Click any talent to open their review in the middle panel.

Rating a Goal

The middle Reviews panel shows one goal at a time with the question "How do you rate the talent's performance on this goal?" The manager selects a number from the rating scale (for example, 1 to 5). Once selected, the rating label and a description appear automatically — for example, selecting 2 might show "Below Expectations" with an explanation of what that rating means.

After selecting a rating, the manager writes a comment in the Comment field to explain their assessment and any guidance for the talent.

If AI Review Assistance is enabled, an AI Assist button appears at the top right of the Reviews panel. Clicking it generates a draft comment for the current goal. See the [AI Review Assistance] article for details.

Using the Performance Areas Panel

The right panel shows the talent's full performance data for reference while the manager fills in the rating and comment. It is organized into collapsible sections:

  • Goals — each goal with its status (On Track / Off Track), KPI progress percentage, target value, deadline, and description

  • Competencies — the talent's competency entries

  • Appraisals — appraisal data if configured

  • Trainings — training records linked to the sheet

  • Potential — potential indicators if enabled

An AI Assist All button at the top of this panel can generate draft comments for all goals at once. No direct input is required in this panel — it is for reference only.

Moving Through Goals and Talents

After completing the rating and comment for the current goal, click Submit & Next to save and move to the next goal for the same talent. A Previous Goal link lets the manager go back to the previous goal if needed. Once all goals for the current talent are reviewed, the panel moves to the next talent in the list. Repeat until all team members have been reviewed.

Submitting the Review

Once all team members have been reviewed, the Manager Review step is marked as complete for that manager. The cycle then advances to the next step in the workflow, which may be a talent acknowledgment, a calibration step, or another configured stage depending on the workflow setup.

Submitted reviews cannot be recalled by the manager. If a review needs to be changed after submission, an admin can return the sheet from the Participants tab in cycle management.

FAQ

What happens if the manager leaves some goals unrated?

The review form will prompt the manager to complete all required ratings before allowing submission. Goals must be rated before the review can be submitted.

Can the manager see the talent's own self-review before completing the manager review?

If a Self Review step is configured before the Manager Review step in the workflow, the manager can view the talent's self-assessment while filling in the review form.

What rating scale is used?

The rating scale is the one configured in Step 4: Rating Settings. The scale type (numeric, star, descriptive labels) and the number of levels were set by the admin before the cycle launched.

Does the review score get shown to the talent right away?

Not immediately. The talent sees their review score when an Acknowledgment step is reached (if configured), or after the cycle closes. This depends on the workflow sequence.
