Learn how to build a structured learning pathway with milestones, content items, and assessments.

Written by Mohamed Shantory

Before You Start

  • You must be a Super Admin or an Admin with content management permissions

  • Have your content items (courses, guides, quizzes, etc.) ready before building you will be selecting them during the Pathway Builder step

  • Read [Pathways Overview] to understand the structure before building

Overview

Creating a Pathway is a multi-step wizard with four stages: Pathway Details, Pathway Builder, Pathway Configuration, and Summary. You can save as Draft at any point and return to finish later. The Pathway only goes live when you click Publish on the final Summary step.

Step 1: Pathway Details

  1. Go to Develop → Pathways from the left navigation

  2. Click + New Pathway

  3. Select the Language — English or Arabic. This sets the language of the Pathway itself

  4. Enter the Development Pathway's Name

  5. Enter a Description — explain what this Pathway covers and who it is for

  6. Add Objectives — up to 40 objectives that describe what Talents will achieve by completing this Pathway

  7. Click Next

💡 Tip: Write objectives as outcomes, not topics. "Understand leadership principles" is a topic. "Apply structured decision-making in team situations" is an outcome. Talents see these objectives before enrolling.

Step 2: Pathway Builder

This is where you define the structure of your Pathway milestones and the content inside them.

Add a Pre Assessment (Optional)

Click + Add Pre Assessment at the top if you want Talents to complete an assessment before accessing the Pathway content. Talents must pass this assessment to unlock the Pathway.

Create Milestones

A Milestone is a named stage that groups related content together. Every Pathway needs at least one Milestone.

  1. A default Milestone 1 is already created for you

  2. To rename it, click the edit icon next to the milestone name

  3. To set a due date for the milestone, click Set Due Date

  4. To add more milestones, drag the Milestone block from the right panel into the builder

Add Content to a Milestone

From the right panel under Items, drag any of the following content types into a Milestone:

  • Courses — full learning modules

  • Kits & Guides — curated resource collections and written guides

  • Bites — short-form content for quick learning

  • Quiz — knowledge checks

  • Checkpoint — progress markers or manual sign-off points

  • Psychometrics — personality or aptitude assessments

Set Item Order

Under Items Order in the right panel, toggle Must take items in order if you want Talents to complete each item before the next one is unlocked. Leave it off if Talents can take items in any order.

Add a Post Assessment (Optional)

Click + Add Post Assessment at the bottom to add a final assessment that measures learning outcomes after Talents complete the Pathway content.

  1. Click Next when your structure is ready or Save as Draft to return later

⚠️ Warning: If you enable "Must take items in order", make sure the sequence makes logical sense. Talents will be blocked from proceeding until each item is completed in the order you set.

Step 3: Pathway Configuration

  1. Select a Category — helps organise the Pathway and makes it discoverable by Talents browsing by topic

  2. Select Linked Competencies — choose the competencies from your framework that this Pathway develops. Completing the Pathway contributes to those competencies

  3. Set the Level — indicate the difficulty or seniority level of this Pathway (e.g., Beginner, Advanced)

  4. Set the Duration — enter the estimated time to complete in minutes, or enable Auto-calculate duration from content total duration to let the system calculate it from the items you added

  5. Upload a Development Pathway Cover (optional) — JPG, PNG, or SVG, max 2MB. Makes the Pathway visually recognisable in the list and on the Talent's dashboard

  6. Click Next

💡 Tip: Always link competencies if your organization uses competency assessments. This is what connects the learning a Talent does to their competency development data

Step 4: Summary

Review everything before publishing. The Summary shows:

  • Pathway Details — language, name, description, objectives

  • Pathway Builder — all content items in order, including pre and post assessments

  • Pathway Configurations — categories, linked competencies, level, duration, cover

  • Certificate Setup — enabled or disabled

If anything needs changing, click Back to return to that step.

When everything looks correct, click Publish Pathway to make it live — or Save as Draft to finish publishing later.

Can I add the same content item to more than one Milestone?

Yes. The same course or content item can appear in multiple Milestones within the same Pathway, or across different Pathways.

What happens if I save as Draft — can Talents see it?

No. Draft Pathways are not visible to Talents. They only become visible after you publish.

Can I go back and edit a Pathway after publishing it?

Yes. See [Editing & Managing Pathways] for details on what can be changed after publishing.
